Early Years

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was born on September 8, 1828, in Brewer, Maine. He was the son of a minister and a teacher. Chamberlain grew up in a devout religious household, and he was deeply influenced by the values of his parents.

Chamberlain was a gifted student, and he excelled in his studies. He graduated from Bown College in 1852, and he then went on to study law at Harvard Law School. However, Chamberlain's interest in the law was short-lived. He soon realized that his true passion was the military.

Military Career

Chamberlain fought in many of the major battles of the Civil War, including the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Gettysburg. Chamberlain's most famous moment came at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the Civil War, Chamberlain returned home to Maine. He was elected governor of Maine in 1866, and he served two terms. Chamberlain also served as president of Bown College from 1871 to 1883.
