Medieval Figures

The Middle Ages was a time of great intellectual and cultural change. This period saw the rise of universities and the development of new ideas in philosophy, science, and the arts.

  • Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274): Italian philosopher and theologian. He is known for his synthesis of Aristotelian philosophy with Christian theology.

  • Galileo Galilei (1564-1642): Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer. He is known for his work on the telescope and for his support of the heliocentric theory.

Enlightenment Figures

The Enlightenment was a period of intellectual and philosophical change that emphasized reason and logic. This period saw the rise of new ideas in politics, economics, and science.

  • John Locke (1632-1704): English philosopher and political theorist. He is known for his theory of natural rights and for his work on the social contract.
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778): French philosopher and writer. He is known for his work on the social contract and for his theory of the general will.
